Kate's Renegade Aboveground Kitchen serves two purposes: To meet fresh interesting faces and to eat fresh and interesting food. Kate covers the food portion brilliantly-- (who knew a Midwesterner could create such great Southern Indian cuisine?) The setting is cozy and the conversation wide ranging-- (Freegan Oprah appearances, traveling knife salesman, trained opera singer, and a model from NJ). While the company could turn out to be a mixed bag the food will be consistently amazing.--Dave T., Red Hook

I had such a lovely time at your dinner. Sorry I had to cut out so abruptly. It was doubly my bad luck; I got caught in a mini snowstorm on the way to the train. The food was marvelous and the company same. You could probably tell by the fact that I cleaned my plate with my tongue on every course, even dessert- something I usually skip. I had a truly great time. You're a remarkable woman. Wow, something about writing to you makes me sound like a 19th century dandy. Or maybe I'm just flattering myself. whenever i come back from one of these dinners, my pockets are stuffed with scribbled notes about new foods to try, new numbers of friends to call and a reminder that i should really try doing this too.
its funny, even across the great borough of brooklyn, the more of these dinners i go to the smaller i realize this world is. i never fail to meet someone who knows someone i know, who also has 'dinners.' or plants in the same community garden. or is editing another's film. there's truly a common spirit and way of life among these folk. the fact that ten strangers can effortlessly come together simply because they like to eat and like that KATE likes to eat (and cook) creates this warm and wonderful sense of support and commraderie that is quite great.
